How does concrete harden?
This process consists of two stages:
The mixture sets. It becomes less mobile and takes the required shape. The higher the air temperature, the faster the concrete sets.
The mixture hardens. This stage begins after the mixture has set. Here, too, a higher temperature speeds up the process.
From this, we can assume that it is better to pour concrete in summer.
Concrete pouring in summer
Of course, the mixture will harden faster and be more durable when it is warm. But it is worth saying that excessively high temperatures can have a negative impact on the quality of the result. Perfect conditions for pouring — air temperatures up to +20 degrees Celsius and humidity not more than 80%.
Concrete pouring in spring or autumn
It is best to pour concrete in early autumn or late spring. It is also important that there are no temperature fluctuations. We recommend to prepare frost-resistant additives in advance just in case.
Concrete pouring in winter
The most in convenient time of a year for pouring. Because of the frost, you will have to buy special additives that make the mixture more resistant to cold. This significantly increases the cost of the work. But this is not the biggest problem in this situation. In winter, it is unlikely to achieve maximum concrete strength.Especially if the temperature drops below -15 degrees Celsius.
In general, concrete can be poured at any time of the year. It all depends on whether you are willing to spend more money and sacrifice the quality of the final result. And also, obviously, on the air temperature. So whenever you work with concrete mixture, you need to remember three basic rules:
- do not pour the foundation in layers. It should be poured in a single session, since the layers will have different strengths when hardening under different conditions.
- try to avoid temperature changes.
- use special frost-resistant additives during the cold season.
